I woke up at 6 am Thursday morning and my back was hurting so I went to the bath. I got out at 6:30, put on a towel, and walked to the living room to check my email.
I hear a noise at the window. Thinking it's a bug trapped between the blinds and the window, I don't think much of it, but I glance over. There is a light shining directly on my window from the other building, which casts shadows of the pillar in front of us and a tree.
There is a new shadow. An arm, reaching across my window, attempting to open it.
At first I freeze, terrified at what I'm seeing. Then I move to the bedroom and wake up Max. He tells me it's probably a cat and to wake him up if it happens again. I take a few steps backwards to look at the window again and now it's just a shoulder and head standing there, looking in through a crack. Then the shadow backs off around the bush in front of the window, and I see his head move around the corner.
I tell him to wake up NOW and see for himself. He gets up and puts on pants, goes to the kitchen and gets a knife, then sits on the couch in front of the window and watches.
5 or so minutes go by.
He tells me to call the cops. The guy was back, just hovering there, trying to see in again.
I go into the other room and call 911. At some point during this he leaves. 20 minutes later or so the cops finally show up, and by now it's light outside and the guy's long gone.
Honestly I don't know which is more creepy, the fact that he was trying to get in, or the fact that he kept looking in and could have been doing so for who knows how long without me noticing.
Either way I am very glad we're moving in a few weeks to a more secure place. And I am ordering pepper spray.
